Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Remarks

England opening batter Zak Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of comments made by captain Ben Stokes about the dressing room not being "weak men".

The all-rounder made this message in several interviews in the wake of his team's defeat in the second Ashes series versus the Australians earlier this month.

Ahead of the third Test, where England are staring at defeat at the earliest opportunity, the captain stated he had allowed his message to "circulate freely" within the playing group.

"I have completed all the talking in recent days that I needed to have done," remarked Stokes.

But, after Crawley made 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he commented: "I missed those remarks."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. We take everything that is said in the press with a pinch of salt," he added.

Raw Conversations and Consistent Messaging

Stokes made the "weak men" observation after his side suffered a loss in Brisbane to fall two matches behind.

The team afterwards took a break to Noosa in the gap between the second and third Tests.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, he revealed his players had held "raw" talks and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their effort to remain alive in the Ashes battle.

Yet, Crawley asserted the messaging from the captain and coach McCullum had stayed consistent with their previous tenure in charge.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, the same as always," said Crawley. "It's on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. It felt like we were capable of an extraordinary feat entering this Test."

Australia On the Verge of Historic Series Victory

Crawley's wicket on day four was part of a decisive three-wicket burst by Australia off-spinner Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in a short spell – including the wickets of Harry Brook and Stokes himself – meant England six down for 207 in pursuit of a notional total of 435.

Consequently, Australia require just four more wickets on Sunday's last day to move to an unassailable 3-0 advantage after three Tests.

Defeat will extend the English team's drought in Australia to 18 Tests and condemn them to a fourth successive overseas Ashes defeat.

This series will be completed in only eleven days of play – after England fell the first two Tests in two and four days each.

Not since 1921, when the Australians completed victory in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been decided so quickly. Australia have also won in 11 days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"It's disappointing," said Crawley. "We came here to regain the Ashes and now we are facing elimination at this point."

"There remains significant pride at stake and we will certainly approach it like that," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been difficult. Australia is a formidable team. It was always going to be hard coming here to face them. They entered as the front-runners and have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Place In Question

Although the opener's innings in Adelaide probably answers questions about his short-term place in the side, Ollie Pope looks under immense pressure for his spot in the Melbourne Test starting December 26th.

Pope fell for 17 in the team's second knock on day four, extending his poor record versus the old enemy.

In 16 Ashes innings, the Surrey man has never made a half-century and averages 17.62.

Only one other England player since 1900 – Amiss – has featured an equal number of innings in the top six in the Ashes and returned a lower average.

However, Crawley insisted any suggestion his teammate is being scrutinised originates with "you guys" – referring to the journalists – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware how good of a player he is," added Crawley. "He has had a productive year to be frank."

"He has produced several excellent innings. It is talk externally. There is no discussion like that on Ollie amongst the players," he finished.
